Sleepy now

My sleep schedule has been all screwed up lately. It has almost completely reversed and is only just now starting to right itself. Not because of anything I've done to fix it, but because I keep staying up later and later and eventually exhaustion just forces me to bed. It's as if I'm living on some sort of 28 hour schedule in a 24 hour world. Everyday my entire daily routine seems to just shift forward a few hours.

Scientists have known for a while that our natural body rhythms don't exactly link all that well with the world around us. By placing research subjects in pitch black environemnts where there is absolutely no light whatsoever, they've been able to find that most of us actually live on a 25-hour cycle when allowed to free run. They believe this developed because over our long evolutionary history, the earth actually had longer days which over the span of millions of years has gotten shorter to our familiar 24 hour one. Light can reset this schedule however, and so with the cues of the sun and artificial lighting, on a daily basis we readjust to the 24 hour day. This predisposition to a longer daily cycle probaly also explains why people find it easier to stay up later than to get to bed earlier in trying to adjust their sleep cycle.

Some people just geneticly have longer cycles on average and sometimes I wonder if I'm one of them. I remember reading in some study somewhere citing the percentages of long cyclers in a population but I have no clue what the actual numbers are. Of course, it's just generally all confounded to heck with the fact that I generally prefer the night to the day anyway. Still, it would be nice to just be able to blame everything on my genes. God knows that's the way it seems things are going nowadays.

The stench of ignorance

Okay, I think I'm in way over my head here. Since I've been looking at a lot of other blogs lately, I thought it would be nice if I tried to get a little more up to date on how blogging is supposed to work when you're not just pissing around on a LJ. I have only the vaguest idea of terms like RSS, XML, atom, pings, trackback, etc. I think I've generally figured out how RSS and the like works, and have downloaded the firefox extension Sage to keep track of it. Everything seems to be working pretty well so far, though I'm not sure how it's really all that much of an advantage than just checking the site. I guess if you have a crapload of blogs you're watching over and following, it must make it nice to know exactly which ones have been updated.

What's currently baffling the living fuck out of me are pings and more specifically trackback. I stumbled across the term on a few blogs and after looking around found a pretty basic summary on Wikipedia. It seems pretty straight forward, right? Wrong. Since I didn't want to pay hundreds of dollars for some high end blogging software, I searched around until I found some bare bones program that would accomplish the job that the creators put out. I took a look at the instructions and my head exploded almost immediately. I could wring more coherance out of this if it were in freaking german or backwards piglatin.

I think what it finally comes down to is you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Back in the day I could proably struggle and research and puzzle this sort of thing out but at this point, just looking at it gives me a headache. Whatever happened to the good old days where the most complex thing you had to master was figuring out all the freaking control codes for emacs?

Anyone out there who can give me a hand and translate?

I've found Dan!

I think there is a really good definitive test that may show if the accuser in the Duke Lacrosse case is making false accusations or at least flat wrong about her IDs. I have no clue if anyone has picked up on it but I just found Dan! In case those who might have forgotten, the accuser stated that three lacrosse players attacked her and that they gave their names as Adam, Brett, and Matt. A lot of people have wondered about this when the fact that neither Seligmann nor Finnerty had first names that matched. The accuser however goes on to state how she believed that some of them might have been using aliases. This is cited by police offiers in the search warrant application listed below and that specifically the one who was introduced to himself as 'Adam' was being called Dan by others at the party.

So who could this third individual be and dosen't the fact that she specificly states that Adam was called 'Dan' bolster her claim? After all, where would she otherwise get that from? And that's where we have the test to once and for all figure out if this is a fabrication or not. All it requires is that we get an idea of who she picked as the 3rd attacker with what she claims is 90% accuracy because I know who 'Dan' is. I'm surprised that other media outlets haven't reported this but here's 'Dan':

Using the name Adam, Dan Flannery, a senior team captain, called an escort service and hired two dancers for $400 each.

Ta da. The person she's accusing of being the third suspect can be no other than Dan Flannery, and she would know both his name and alias because he was the one who not only hired her, but was the one to pay her as well. This might be the individual that she had the most contact with that night before the alleged assault. So who was the third picture she pulled from the lineup with her claim of 90% accuracy? If it wasn't Flannery's than we either know that the IDs are completely worthless or that it's a fabrication. Adam aka Dan was the only one she would have known for sure who was using an alias that night since she had to meet him upfront upon arriving at the house. If she were seeking to bolster her claims of an assault, she would naturally hope to be able to name the individuals correctly and he was the only one who she would have known for sure what his name was and how it was different from the alias he gave to hire her.

Once we get a better look at the lineup report and see who the 90% photo pick was, we can get a much better idea if the lineup is a crock and possibly some insight into whether the entire accusation is crap. It won't prove her case, but it might help greatly in disproving it if the photo is not Flannery's.
