And it's not even for denigrating man-sheep love

If you have the right fame of mind, curiosity, and don't mind occasionally getting mind-raped, the fact that some foreign country has banned a piece of media often actively encourages you to go take a look. I'm in the midst of this as I'm watching a two-part OVA called Puni Puni Poemi. It was on my watch list mostly because it was a spin-off of Excel Saga which I had heard good things about as a spastic parody romp. I had planned to watch PPPoemi after I finished Excel Saga, but a snippet in Wikipedia bumped it up for me:

Puni was banned in New Zealand in December 2004, on the grounds that it "tends to promote and support the exploitation of children and young persons for sexual purposes, and to a lesser extent, the use of sexual coercion to compel persons to submit to sexual conduct."

I know it doesn't sound good but I just had to know what was so awful that New Zealand banned the whole thing outright. There is a lot of disturbing and twisted shit out there, but how freaky could a comedy spinoff really be?

Now that I've finished watching both episodes, you can color me confused. I don't get at all where all the charges even fit to which scenes. I mean, parts of it are disturbing in a crazy and spastic sort of way, like one of the main villains has a pair of spikey metal testicles that hang scrotum-less down to his ankles. You definitely need a half-cup of brain bleach after seeing him pick them up and spin them in his hand. There's also fan-service a'plenty though it's hardly the sort of thing to give any normal person much of a thrill and largely features characters over any age of consent. The only exception I guess is the rampaging schoolgirl lesbian who wants to glomp the protagonist but whenever someone talks about sexual predation they almost exclusively reference men.

All in all, I think I've narrowed down the disconnect to one of 3 possibilities:

1) New Zealand simply has a stick up its ass
2) What was viewed as awful beyond words in 2004 now looks quaint and harmless 5 years later
3) I've seen so much twisted and disturbing shit that what would freak out an average person no longer phases me

“Well, it's been a very long time since I've made voice ___. This is the first in probably couple of months at least. It's not really very surprising when you think about it. Usually I'm more likely to make a voice ___ if I'm actually out somewhere and ___ computer and lately I just don't go anywhere. I tell myself that I should try to re involve myself in things. It almost doesn't matter what, just anything. I mean for a long time I was interested in board games and there will be game days and things like that but well, due to some unpleasant mess I haven't done that in ages and nothing's really filled that slot. So I really don't do much of anything lately. I wonder if that's actually some of the cause feel down lately or maybe it's just the reverse. Maybe I don't do anything because I feel bad. Chicken or the egg. All I know is that there are a couple of days where I feel ok and then everything just feels like a fifth(?) sandwich it's not much that fun.”
