LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Actor Pat Morita, whose portrayal of the wise and dry-witted Mr. Miyagi in "The Karate Kid" earned him an Oscar nomination, has died. He was 73.
Morita died Thursday at his home in Las Vegas of natural causes, said his wife of 12 years, Evelyn. She said in a statement that her husband, who first rose to fame with a role on "Happy Days," had "dedicated his entire life to acting and comedy."
In 1984, he appeared in the role that would define his career and spawn countless affectionate imitations. As Kesuke Miyagi, the mentor to Ralph Macchio's "Daniel-san," he taught karate while trying to catch flies with chopsticks and offering such advice as "wax on, wax off" to guide Daniel through chores to improve his skills.
Poor Mr Miyagi. I always thought the japanese were supposed to live years longer than average. It looks like Pat came in on the rising slope of the bell curve on this one. Oh well.
I just watched the first three karate kid movies not too long ago after having bought a dvd set with all four movies. I couldn't bring myself to actually see the one with hillary swank in it. Girls, feh. What do they have to do with karate anyway. She should have gotten the ghost of julia child to give her cooking lessons or something instead.
Of course, it's not like they could have made another karate kid movie with whatshisface that played Daniel. What was he, like in his late 20's in the third movie? By the time they got around to casting him again he would have probaly been the middle age karate kid. I can see the script now. A wise Mr Miyagi, living in a retirement community somewhere and suffering from early onset alzheimers trains his middle age pupil in karate techniques so he can battle his evil boss who refuses to give him the promotion he deserves and the heartless bank who wants to foreclose on his home mortgage. Not exactly a stirring sort of plot.
On a sidenote, never did get around to any of the black friday sales. Stayed up until around dawn and took a shower in preparation for venturing out. As I was laying on the bed with an audiobook to pass the time the sandman clocked me over the head and I didn't really regain consciousness for like 9 hours. Oh well. I didn't need a gameboy sp anyway. I could however use a new computer chair at some point though there's no rush. If I place an order online they can ship the sucker anyway.
