Stealth holidays

It's an unusual experience when you run into a holiday that you've never heard of before. I mean, it's not like I'm Jewish or something where it seems that every other week there's some obscure day meant to memorialize some battle or righteous heathen smiting. I was reading the Dork Tower feed and got sort of flummoxed by today's comic. I didn't exactly understand what it was refering to and assumed that it had simply been a FUBAR and they ran some sort of Valentine's Day comic instead of what should have been there.

I decided to search around and it turns out that Sweetest Day is an actual holiday of sorts celebrated in the states. Heck, I even live in the supposed region in which it exists (well, sorta). For all that it's supposedly been around for decades, this is the first I've heard of it. I've never seen the supposed greeting cards that exist to celebrate it nor have I seen a commercial for it or anything. Considering how we live in a world alive with advertisements and marketing, it's almost creepy that there would be such an odd blackout.

Anyway, it's too late now since the day has come and past but maybe this entry will remind me for next year. It might be fun to do something Sweetest Day related just for the novelty of it all if nothing else.
