A wink and a nod

It's always interesting when you run across some stories and you just know that a whole heck of a lot more went on than the reporters are saying.

Police: Good Samaritans Stop Rape In Progress

SALEM, Ore. -- Five Good Samaritans stopped a rape in progress in a south Salem neighborhood, according to police.

Officers said a 22-year-old woman on crutches was walking near the intersection of Liberty and Boone streets southeast just before 1 a.m. Saturday when she was attacked and assaulted by 37-year-old Paul Landingham.

According to authorities, a car with five people was driving by, saw what was happening and came to the woman's rescue.

Three men pulled Landingham off the woman and held him until police arrived at the scene.

It sounds pretty cut and dry. There was a video clip that offered a little more info such as other people heard the commotion and the 5 people who stopped were three men and two women. While the men restrained the guy, the women comforted and helped out the victim. Just as I finish reading the story my eyes pan right and I see a picture of the rapist as he was arrested.

Ya, suuuurrre. They only 'held him' until the police arrived.

Now, this is not to say that I don't think Mr Rapist there didn't deserve a beat down. Hell, I'm all for this sort of vigilante justice when some crank is caught in the act. Criminals should know that there's a liklihood that they're going to fall down the stairs repeatedly or accidently get bits and pieces caught in slamming desk drawers. Even if it dosen't deter crime, it makes me feel bette. What I find sorta funny is that the news report completely fails to comment on the fact that this guy looks like he went 4 rounds with Mike Tyson back in the day before he became a pussy. They beat the ever-loving shit out of him. I guess a wink and a nod is fine, but I would have much preferred to instead see something in the news report saying, 'and this is the beat down we hope all rapists get when caught in the act'. The pathetic part is this guy will probably end up suing for civil damages and based on that picture, some soft-skulled jury will award him millions.
