From velvet night came forth

You'd think I'd be used to it by now, but there's something sort of special about pain in the middle of the night. It's the knowledge that there are millions of people out there, blissfully asleep without any cares while you're sitting up.

I've always been a night person. When I was in college, I still remember one winter vacation where I went the entire period without seeing the sun. Given half a chance, my sleep cycle would reverse on a dime and settle into one which closely mimiced that of vampires. The same aspects that gave the night its appeal are the ones that often make it problematic now. The solitude and quiet allowed me to write papers or read or do many things that just didn't seem to fit in the garish light of day. The night allows you to contemplate without the presence of others and the stir of the day. Of course, nowadays what I often get to contemplate is 'Ow! Why won't it frakking stop feeling stabby?' I haven't managed to come up with any profound answers to date. The best that seems to come to mind is just 'Because...'.
