Macho, macho man

A while back I posted the poll results of a survey asking Japanese men to rank-order their fetishes when it came to women. The results started out pretty normal but got a bit strange around halfway through, which led me to speculate about why it is the Japanese are so weird. It turns out that I might have jumped the gun a bit since I just found a survey which asks women the same question about men and their answers might be even more demented.

,077 members completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 51.0% of the sample were female, 8.7% in their teens, 15.3% in their twenties, 27.0% in their thirties, 27.8% in their forties, 11.9% in their fifties, and 9.3% aged sixty or older. Naturally, only the women answered this survey.

Voice 100
Veins in the back of the hand 52.6
Really muscular butt 32.7
Fat fingers 30.6
= Adam’s apple 26.0
= Silky hair 26.0
Prominent wrist bones 24.5
“Gorilla Macho” muscle men 21.9
Exposed V of skin in unbuttoned white shirts 18.9
5 o’clock shadow 13.8
Scrawny chest 11.2
Body smell 9.2
Lower lips 7.7
Just-shaved look 7.1
Ankles 6.6
Untamed hair 6.1
= White bits left after tanning 4.6
= Upper lips 4.6
Thin eyebrows 4.1
Sideburns 2.6

Maybe I'm just out of touch, and I'll be the first to admit this isn't exactly my field of interest to begin with, but I just find it odd that Japanese women have a thing for veins and fat fingers. It makes me wonder if there's some sort of translational snafu since if you ran this survey in the states, I'm not sure there would be a whole lot of overlap.

I do find it sort of interesting that 'voice' ranks highly among both men and women. I guess it shouldn't be surprising since there are such idealized examples of how both men and women should sound, sort of like the idea of a John Wayne western in the states a few decades ago.
