Worlds Collide

It's always sort of interesting when two of your seperate interests or fandoms come crashing together in unexpected ways. I imagine for most people this probably involves some piece of slash or shipping in which diverse characters meet in unlikely situations in order to swap biological samples. In the case I just stumbled over, it's a clash between Tanga and True Dungeon Treasure Tokens.

A while back, Tanga solicited people to send in random bits of flotsom. The items would all be assembled into a collage of sorts and the whole thing would then be turned into a jigsaw puzzle. Welp, the puzzle has finally become avaliable for sale at a price of $14.99 plus shipping. The interesting part is what someone mailed in for the puzzle.

In case you can't immediately find Waldo, here's a blowup:

Surprise, surprise. It seems sorta fitting that it appears next to the money. I wonder if any particular thought was put into sending in 50' of role as opposed to some other token. Or maybe someone just dropped a handful into an envelope and that's what the Tanga guys decided to use in the end.

I'm not inclined to buy a copy of the puzzle but the unexpected confluence was a dash of unexpected happy.

The banality of relief

I'm sure there were far, far more worthwhile things to do with the past couple days that could have truly celebrated my ability to sit around for any real length of time without pain. The possible plethora of options spring to mind, each more entrancing than the last. What I ended up using the time for was making a crapload of Tanga puzzles and listening to This American Life.

I'd caught the latter sporadicly as I've listened to NPR over the years and I've always found the stories interesting. Even though they always give out the website address during each show and state that it's free to listen to past programs, I had never really gotten around to pulling it up. Well, today I did and I'm currently trying to work my way backwards through the show's long history. Apparently it was started back in 1995 and there are over 300 shows. That roughly translates to almost 2 weeks worth of straight audio. Chances are I'll be at this for a while.

As for the Tanga puzzles....who knows. I'm pretty much sick of solving the puzzles and there hasn't been anything on there I've wanted to buy in weeks. I'm not sure what even keeps me at the site other than inertia. Because of that, the fact that I put in significant time to come up with 5 more puzzles is sorta baffling. I'll display them here behind a LJ cut, not that any of you have expressed real interest or applitude in puzzle solving.

Puzzle Debut

One of my submitted puzzles is going to pop up on Tanga in a couple of hours. I've got no clue which one it'll be, but it's sorta exciting waiting for it regardless. It was selected to appear in the first batch of user-reated puzzles and I'm hoping it'll be well received. I've thought about trying to jot off a few more but I figured I'd wait and see how the reception for those already in go.

After all, no one here seems to be really interested and if I discussed them with people on tanga or BGG, it'd only spoil it if it were ever used.

Tanga puzzles

I just crafted a new puzzle for tanga! Considering the only person who took a stab at the last one was a complete stranger, I imagine that this will generate a profound lack of enthusiasm. I figured I'd still share it just on the offchance that one of you wants to take a crack at it. I think it's the best one I've come up with so far.

Puzzlemaster

Tanga is accepting puzzle submissions and I sent one in. I figured I'd share it here and see if anyone had any other suggestions for good puzzles.

In case you have no clue what I'm talking about, Tanga is a semi-new, woot-like site that offers daily deals for a discounted price. A good chunk of the time it features boardgames, which is why I'm over there really. It also has a daily puzzle to solve for which you receive Tanga Points, which can be used for auctions and other goodies. The puzzles are alternately entertaining and frustrating and it's gotten to be a habit for me to solve them each night. The type of puzzle is about as eclectic as it gets from simple verbal puns to complex whozits that require a printer and a pair of sissors. About the only thing I haven't seen yet is a mathematical puzzle. Hmmm...maybe I should think up a couple of those and pop them in.

Anyway, here's my puzzle for those of you interested. The answer is one word and to sweeten the pot, I'll give a prize to whoever solves it first. I have no clue what that prize might be off the top of my head, but I'll sort out something.

The Puzzlethon is dead, long live the Puzzlethon

Over the course of 24 hours and change, from 10pm last night to around 11pm today, I've been working on tanga's Puzzlethon. I'm not sure I ever mentioned tanga in the LJ, but I know I discussed it on a couple of other boards. Basically it's a website that's either allied with or even run by some of the people behind BoardGameGeek. They decided to start a company that was a little like woot which basically offers a daily deal at largly discounted prices. The incentive is for every person to check in each day at the moment the new deal is revealed because if it's a good one, it's going to sell fast. Tanga has sorta become the woot for gamer geeks due to the fact that they offer boardgames. You can buy up to 3 of any item for the same shipping cost so the incentive is to pick things up in bulk. (On a sidenote, I've picked up a ton of stuff for christmas presents this year)

Anyway, to hype the site before it debuted, they offered daily puzzles you could solve for 'tanga points'. To this day, it's never been fully explained what those points will be used for, but the response was so positive that they continued on with it even after the website opened. Yesterday was their celebration of Cyber Monday and featured a puzzlethon, a puzzle every hour for 24 hours and a prize to the top 10 finishers. They also offered a lot of really kickass deals on various items.

Because of the puzzlethon, I sacrificed a lot of sleep and have been more or less churning away at the site with pauses for naps and downtime. I managed to get all 24 of the puzzles and I figure I have a 1 in 50 chance to get the prize. Because of some server issues, the puzzlethon has been extended. If you're interested in giving it a shot, it'll go until 7am pst. I pretty much have a list of the answers I can give you but if you win we have to split the prize :P.
